TV SHOW GUEST 03.25.2014 EVERYONE THINKS I AM NORMAL…Kerry Leavitt, LCSW works as a private practice psychotherapist and trauma consultant in Charlottesville, VA. She has over 20 years of expertise in the treatment of psychological trauma. Ms. Leavitt’s professional articles have appeared in a variety of mental health journals and she has lectured about trauma-related topics nationally and internationally. Ms. Leavitt holds a BA from Stanford University. She earned an MSW from Smith College’s School for Social Work where she also taught treatment of trauma courses as an adjunct faculty member. While Adjunct Faculty for University of Virginia Medical School’s Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction (CSMHI), Ms. Leavitt traveled with a delegation to the Republic of Georgia. In this capacity, Ms. Leavitt provided training to trauma therapists at the Georgian Center for Psychosocial and Medical Rehabilitation of Torture Victims and offered lectures on trauma and dissociation at Tbilisi University. A longtime practitioner of meditation, Ms. Leavitt taught trauma-sensitive mindfulness practices to female inmates at the maximum security facility in Fluvana, VA. Ms. Leavitt currently teaches a class at the University of Virginia entitled, Understanding Self: A User’s Guide. In this spring-semester course, offered through UVA’s Department of Continuing and Professional Studies, adult learners delve into the topic, “Everyone Thinks I am Normal,” that we will discuss as a panel today. Prior to her professional career as a trauma psychotherapist, Ms. Leavitt worked in U.S. presidential politics and as a staff member in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Ms. Leavitt has examined the questions of trauma and “self,” thriving and surviving from multiple perspectives. Her favorite off-hours avenues for inquiry into these farthest reaches of human nature include the practices of Chi Kung, conscious dance, yoga, meditation, extensive international travel and time in nature with her Border Collie, Sukha.
