Description
One out of every 6 American women has been the victim or rape or attempted rape in her lifetime. Yet, many women never talk about having been a victim of sexual violence. The reasons why are multiple, but often women don’t share this “secret,” because they fear a negative response.
Victims of sexual assault are 3 times more likely to suffer from depression, 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol, and 26 times more likely to abuse drugs. A positive response to a rape survivor can change these statistics. Support from family and friends can decrease symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and increase the likelihood of women getting assistance from community resources.
This talk will include information about ways to help women feel more supported. This should improve outcomes for victims, may provide ways to hold more offenders accountable, and offer options for prevention.
